Turning exam papers into structured practice at scale
An exam-prep company used Docen to parse past papers, mark schemes, and diagrams into clean, structured content.
The challenge
An exam-prep company built its product on decades of past papers and mark schemes — most of them PDFs and scans full of diagrams, equations, and multi-column layouts. Getting them into clean, tagged practice questions by hand was slow and expensive.
The approach
Docen parsed each paper into structured Markdown, kept equations and figures intact, and extracted question numbers, marks, and answer keys against a schema. Docen Eval scored the pipeline on a labeled sample so the team could trust it before running the full archive.
- Parsing and layout to recover clean structure.
- Schema-driven extraction for the fields that mattered.
- Evaluation against a labeled sample before rollout.
The outcome
The content team turned a manual bottleneck into an automated pipeline, freeing them to focus on pedagogy rather than transcription.
Equations and diagrams used to be where automated tools gave up. Docen handled them well enough that we could finally trust the pipeline.— Head of Content, exam-prep company
